Brilliant Cut vs Step Cut

An oval is a brilliant cut: dozens of small, angled facets in a softly rounded outline, so it sparkles much like a round. An emerald cut is a step cut: long, straight facets set in rows around a rectangular table, with cropped corners. Instead of sparkle, it gives broad, mirror-like flashes of light, often called a hall-of-mirrors effect.

The oval reads as soft and modern; the emerald cut as crisp, architectural and a little vintage.

Which Looks Bigger?

The oval. In our search a typical 1 carat oval measures about 8.0 by 5.6 mm face-up, against about 6.9 by 4.8 mm for a 1 carat emerald cut. At 2 carats it is about 10.1 by 7.1 mm against 8.6 by 6.0 mm.

Both shapes are long, so both make the finger look slimmer. Our guide Understanding Diamond Size Before You Buy explains face-up size.

What to Check in an Oval

  • Ratio. Most people prefer 1.35 to 1.50; the typical 1 carat oval in our search is about 1.44. Lower looks rounder, higher looks longer and slimmer.
  • Bow tie. A darker band across the center; look for a faint one, or none, in the photos and 360° view.
  • Symmetry. Both halves should mirror each other, with evenly rounded ends.

What to Check in an Emerald Cut

  • Clarity. Its open, step-cut facets show inclusions more easily than a brilliant, so VS clarity or higher is a common choice. Choose a stone that looks clean in its video.
  • Ratio. The classic emerald cut is about 1.4 to 1.5; the typical 1 carat stone in our search is about 1.45.
  • Corners. The cropped corners protect the stone; a prong or bezel at each corner keeps them safe.

Settings for Each Shape

Both shapes suit a solitaire, which shows the full outline, and a three stone ring, like our Valencia and Victoria, which frames the center. A bezel, a thin rim of metal around the stone, protects the corners of an emerald cut and gives an oval a clean, modern line. An emerald cut can also be set east-west, turned across the finger, as in our Elowen ring.
