Same Outline, Different Facets

An emerald cut is a step cut: long, parallel facets arranged like steps, which give broad flashes of light and a calm, glassy look often called a hall of mirrors. A radiant uses the same rectangle with cut corners but fills it with brilliant facets, the kind used on a round, so it sparkles brightly. Both have cropped corners, which protect the stone and suit everyday wear.

Sparkle and Style

An emerald cut looks understated and architectural, with a vintage, Art Deco feel; its beauty is in clean lines and clarity rather than sparkle. A radiant looks brighter and more contemporary, with the fire of a brilliant cut in a structured shape. If you love a sleek, quiet look, choose the emerald; if you want the most sparkle from a rectangle, choose the radiant.

Clarity and Color: Where the Difference Shows

An emerald cut's open facets let you see deep into the stone, so inclusions and any tint of color are easier to notice. Many buyers choose VS2 clarity or better and G color or better, and check the photos to confirm the diamond looks clean. A radiant's many small facets break up the light and mask small inclusions, so an eye-clean radiant is often easier to find at the same grade.

Our guide Beyond the Grade explains how inclusions show in each cut.

Size and Shape on the Hand

In our lab-grown diamond search, a typical 1 carat emerald cut measures about 6.9 by 4.8 mm and a typical 1 carat radiant about 7.1 by 5.0 mm, so the radiant faces up a little larger. Both typically have a length-to-width ratio of about 1.4 to 1.5, the classic rectangle; a radiant can also be nearly square. Either shape can be set east-west, turned across the finger, as in our Elowen rings.

How to Choose Between Emerald and Radiant

  1. Pick the light you love. Calm, mirror-like flashes for an emerald; bright sparkle for a radiant.
  2. Check clarity in the photos. Especially for an emerald cut, choose a stone that looks clean in its video.
  3. Decide on the outline. Both come as classic rectangles; a radiant can also be nearly square.
  4. Choose the setting. A solitaire, a three stone ring or an east-west setting all suit both cuts.
  5. Ask us. Yareli, our founder and designer, can compare emerald and radiant diamonds with you by video or phone.

Emerald vs Radiant FAQ

What is the difference between an emerald and a radiant cut?

Both are rectangles with cut corners. An emerald cut has long, parallel step facets that give broad flashes; a radiant has brilliant facets that sparkle like a round.

Which sparkles more, emerald or radiant?

A radiant. Its brilliant facets return more scattered sparkle; an emerald cut gives calmer, mirror-like flashes.

Which looks bigger, emerald or radiant?

In our search a typical 1 carat radiant faces up about 7.1 by 5.0 mm and an emerald cut about 6.9 by 4.8 mm, so the radiant looks slightly larger.

Which hides inclusions better?

A radiant. An emerald cut's open facets show inclusions more, so many buyers choose VS2 clarity or better for an emerald.

Is an emerald cut cheaper than a radiant?

For lab-grown diamonds they cost about the same at 1 and 2 carats in our search; at 3 carats emerald cuts were typically lower.
