Marquise vs Round Diamonds: Which Should You Choose?

Bold Points or a Classic Circle

Marquise and round diamonds are both brilliant cuts, so both sparkle. The difference is the outline: a marquise is long and comes to a point at each end, a round is a perfect circle. Here is how they compare in look, face-up size, price and what to check, with real figures from our diamond search.

Bold Points or a Classic Circle

A round brilliant is cut as a circle with 57 or 58 facets, arranged to return as much light to the eye as possible. A marquise uses brilliant facets too, in a long, narrow outline that tapers to a point at both ends, like a boat seen from above.

The round reads as classic and symmetrical; the marquise as bold and a little vintage.

Which Looks Bigger?

The marquise. In our search a typical 1 carat marquise measures about 10.5 by 5.2 mm face-up, against about 6.4 mm across for a 1 carat round. At 2 carats it is about 13.2 by 6.6 mm against 8.1 mm across. The marquise covers much more of the finger's length, which makes it look larger for its weight and the hand look slimmer; the round is wider and more compact.

What to Check in a Round

  • Cut grade. Cut decides how much a round sparkles, so choose Excellent or Ideal.
  • Clarity and color. A round's many small facets hide inclusions well, so an eye-clean VS2 usually looks the same in a ring as a higher grade, and G or H color faces up white in most settings.
  • Prongs. Four prongs show more of the diamond; six hold it in more places.

What to Check in a Marquise

  • Both points. Choose a setting with a prong or bezel over each tip.
  • Ratio. Most marquise diamonds in our search measure about 2.00 to 1; higher looks slimmer, lower looks fuller.
  • Symmetry. The two halves should mirror each other, with the points in line.
  • Bow tie. A darker band across the center; look for a faint one in the photos and 360° view.

Settings for Each Shape

A round sits in four or six prongs and suits almost any setting. A marquise needs its two points protected: a V-shaped prong over each tip, or a bezel, a thin rim of metal around the stone. Many of our designs come in both shapes, so you can compare like for like: Estelle as a split-shank solitaire, Celestia on a V-shaped band, Isadora as a sculptural bypass and Eclipse on a band that coils around the finger.

How to Choose Between Marquise and Round

  1. Pick the outline you love. Bold and long, with two points, for a marquise; a perfect circle for a round.
  2. Think about size on the hand. A marquise looks larger for its weight and makes the finger look slimmer.
  3. Think about everyday wear. A round has no points to protect; a marquise has two.
  4. Compare prices at your size in our diamond search; rounds cost less at every size we checked.
  5. Ask us. Yareli, our founder and designer, can compare marquise and round diamonds with you by video or phone.

Marquise vs Round FAQ

Which looks bigger, a marquise or a round?

A marquise: in our search a typical 1 carat marquise measures about 10.5 by 5.2 mm face-up, against about 6.4 mm across for a 1 carat round.

Is a marquise diamond cheaper than a round?

Not in our lab-grown search. A typical 1 carat marquise cost about $560 against $385 for a round, and at 2 carats about $1,070 against $895.

Which sparkles more, marquise or round?

A well-cut round gives the most even sparkle of any shape. A marquise is a brilliant cut too and sparkles brightly, but it can show a bow tie, a darker band across the center.

Which is more durable, marquise or round?

A round, because it has no points. A marquise is durable too when each point sits under a prong or inside a bezel.

What ratio is best for a marquise diamond?

Most marquise diamonds in our search measure about 2.00 to 1; a higher ratio looks slimmer and a lower one fuller. A round is always 1 to 1.
