How Much Do the Grades Matter?

Less than for natural diamonds. In our search, eight in ten 2 carat rounds with top grades, D to F color, VVS2 clarity or better and an Ideal cut, cost $750 to $2,500, against $700 to $2,000 for G color or better, VS2 clarity or better and an Excellent cut, and the middle price is only about 9% higher. Because lab-grown diamonds of high color and clarity are plentiful, you can often choose top grades for a small step up.

Cut still matters most for sparkle, so keep it Excellent or Ideal. Our guide The 4 C’s of Buying Diamonds explains each grade.

Lab-Grown vs Natural at 2 Carats

A 2 carat lab-grown diamond is a real diamond with the same hardness and sparkle as a natural one, and the price gap is large at this size: a ring with a 2 carat natural center costs about 6 to 20 times as much as the same ring, in the same metal and grade, with a lab-grown one. Both come with an IGI or GIA report that states the diamond's origin.

How to Choose a 2 Carat Diamond

  1. Keep the cut Excellent or Ideal. It decides the sparkle.
  2. Consider top color and clarity. For lab-grown, they often cost only a little more.
  3. Look just under 2 carats if you want the same look for less.
  4. Check the photos and 360° view of each stone, and open its IGI or GIA report.
  5. Ask us. Yareli, our founder and designer, can compare diamonds with you by video or phone.
