The Best Way to Measure Ring Size

The mine & grown free ring sizer and size chart ensures that you get the perfect fit first time every time.

USE OUR FREE RING SIZER

We believe finding the perfect ring size should be as simple as clicking a button. This is why we’ll send you a free reusable unisex ring sizer when you are ready.

Simply wrap the sizer around your finger, adjust until you feel comfortable with the fit, and note down the size. Once you find the perfect size, you’ll feel like it’s never going to slip off, but you’ll be able to easily slide it over your knuckle when it’s time to take it off.

How to Measure Ring Size at Home

Not sure what the perfect ring size is? We have three easy methods that will help you find the perfect fit at home.

1. The DIY Ring Sizer

You will need:

  • Some string, dental floss, or a thin strip of paper
  • A permanent marker pen and a ruler

Steps:

  1. Cut your piece of string (or equivalent material) so that it is no shorter than three inches.
  2. Take one end and wrap it around the base of the finger you want to measure.
  3. Use your pen to mark where the end of the string overlaps with the rest of the string.
  4. Flatten the string and measure the distance between the end and the mark, noting it down in mm.
  5. Use our Ring Size Conversion Chart (below) to turn the length in mm into a corresponding ring size.
2. The Printable Ring Sizer

You will need:

  • A computer, printer, and paper
  • A pair of cutting scissors

Steps:

  1. Print out our Printable Ring Sizer & Conversion Chart (below), taking care to set page scaling to ‘100’ and to use 8.5 x 11-inch size paper.
  2. Follow the cutting instructions to create your own ring sizer.
  3. Wrap the ring sizer around the base of your finger, ensuring a snug but comfortable fit.
  4. Pass the pointed end through the slit in the ring sizer and note down the number that is aligned with the slit to give your ring size.
  5. If you are between sizes, half and quarter sizes are also available.

3. The Existing Ring Method

What Should You Look For in a Ring Fit?

The right ring size will offer a snug fit that never feels like it will slip, as well as being easy to gently slide over your knuckle when you need to take it off. It should not feel tight, and it should be easily removed with minimal force.

What’s the Solution When You are Between Ring Sizes?

It’s not uncommon to find that your finger is between two ring sizes, but this is nothing to worry about. As a general rule, we recommend that you size up rather than size down. This is because finger size will change during the day and with temperature, so it is best to avoid a ring fit that may feel too tight at times. You can also make any ring feel slightly more snug at home, whereas sizing up requires the expertise of a professional. We can also offer quarter sizes to make sure that you get exactly what you need.

Professional Ring Size Tips

The perfect ring deserves the perfect fit. Remember to read these tips from the experts here at Mine & Grown before making your selection:

  •  Always measure the finger you want the ring to sit on because the hand you write with is often slightly larger.
  • Remember that a wide, chunky brand will feel tighter on your finger than a narrow band because of the amount of your finger it covers. Adding a half size for bands thicker than 4 mm will take care of this.
  • Bands that are very thin (less than 1.3 mm) can feel a little looser. Drop down half a size to take care of this.
  • When you are cold, your fingers contract, and when you are hot, they expand. Make sure to take your measurement under normal conditions.
  • Measure your finger in the afternoon or evening when the size is the most stable. If you have large knuckles, we suggest measuring the knuckle as well as the base of the finger. Once you have both measurements, pick an intermediate size to strike the right balance.

Which Types of Rings Can’t be Resized?

Open bands and eternity rings cannot generally be resized because of their unique structure. Other rings that use alternative metals may also be difficult to resize because of the mechanical properties of the material.

To make sure you understand your options, all of the rings in our collection that cannot be resized are clearly highlighted on the
relevant product page. For peace of mind, we also offer a 30-day free exchange period as standard.
